SELF-DETERMINATION

The principles of self-determination are based on the belief that:

ALL PERSONS HAVE EQUAL VALUE

SELF-DETERMINATION MEANS THAT:

All people have the right to direct their own lives in the manner they decide.

All people have enough information available to make decisions that lead to informed choices.

People take responsibility for outcomes arising from their informed choices.

THE PRINCIPLES OF SELF-DETERMINATION ARE:

·         DIGNITY AND RESPECT

All people have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and to be respected as a whole person (body, mind and spirit)

·         RELATIONSHIPS

All people need a support network or circle of close friends and family to provide strength and assistance.

·         CHOICE

All people have the right to choose what they will do with their lives and with whom they will do it.

·         CONTROL

People have the power to make decisions and control all aspects of their lives.

·         DREAMING

All people have dreams and goals. A commitment to helping people fulfill their dreams is essential.

·         CONTRIBUTION AND COMMUNITY

Everyone has the ability to contribute to their community in a way that is meaningful to them.
